Lead Pastor

I live in White Bear Lake with my wife, kids and pugs. I'm interested in walking with people as they learn how to practice the Jesus way in their lives. I would rather read an old book than a new one, especially if I'm sipping on good cup of coffee. I also do a fair bit of helping people cultivate a habit of prayer in their life.

Half of me gravitates towards St. Francis- mystic, charismatic, and contemplative- while the other half gravitates towards St. Thomas- scholastic, reasoned, and philosophical. For the past 15 years I've been in vocational ministry, I've been learning how to synthesize these divergent approaches. I love that at Awaken East I can integrate my whole self into following Jesus. I want to help others who have felt like following Jesus meant they had to partition their head-space or their heart-space become the holistic selves God intended them to be. I want to help artists, songwriters, and musicians find lasting joy in communing with God thru their art,  Beyond serving at Awaken East, I am a husband and a father to three wonderful children.  I love Star Wars  (arguably even more than Dan!), basketball, Batman, and recording music.

My deepest held value is hospitality. My wife, Haley, and I live in St. Paul with our three dogs. We have aspired in every way to make our home a hospitable place--a space where the people who enter are filled with peace and love. I aspire to bring that ethos into every situation and space I enter. At Awaken, I am primarily focused on community kinds of things, and I hope that any interaction you have with me will leave you feeling peaceful, loved, and seen. I am floored by the thought that I get to be a small part of what God is doing in and through the community of Awaken.

Some fun facts: I love dogs. I also think goats are majorly cool. Haley and I love to hike. I am wrapping up my Master's degree in Divinity. My favorite distraction from homework is sitting down with strangers (or, as I like to call them, "new friends") and connecting over a cup of coffee. Reach out to me with any questions--if I don't know the answer, I can probably connect you to the person who does.

For most of my adult life, I have served in churches, both as volunteer and paid staff serving in a variety of areas. Most of time while I was working days in a church, I was working nights in a bar. And most of my life is a bit like that, in complete contradiction and opposition to the other. I’m a little bit of a whole slew of things, think polypreneur....I have big opinions and enjoy the dialogue around those opinions. I’m a total work in progress...standing and straining to see the good way. (Jeremiah 6:16)
I’m a wife to one and momma to two. I am incredibly passionate about job creation and empowering individuals out of poverty through fair trade and ethical purchases. I’m a birth doula; and I truly believe every time I’ve attended a birth, I’ve been witness to the divine, standing on holy ground, holding sacred space.
